Homeland Shopping Trip 2/11/11

This week  it took me a little longer to make it out to the store.  We had more snow here in Oklahoma this week, plus both of my girls have been fighting cold symptoms the past few days.  Anyway, I finally took advatage of the warmer weather today, and my husband stayed home with my 3 month old while my 2 year old and I ran to Homeland to see what deals we could snag this week!  Here's how we did:

2 Boxes Cheez-Its
6 8Packs of Juicy Juice 100% Juice
2 Williams Chili Seasoning Packets
2 Hillshire Farm Lunchmeat
2 Crest Toothepastes
1 RRR Ground Beef

Total Before Coupons: $52.29
Total I paid after coupons: $13.21
Savings = 77%

This was not my best trip ever, but I didn't really see a whole lot of sale items that when matched with coupons would be FREE or a price that I was willing to pay.  We needed juice, so I took the opportunity to stock up while I could get it for 69 cents a pack.  I'm looking forward to seeing what's on sale next week!

How did you do this week?  I would love to hear your stories and see your pictures of how much you were able to save.  I may even blog about it!

Organizing Your Coupons

I know when I first started collecting coupons I had them stuffed in my wallet, falling out & getting wrinkled with absolutely no sort of organization.  This drove me crazy!  If you know me at all, you know I'm very organized and like to have everything in its place!  With  my coupons out of control I couldn't remember which ones I had, how many I had, or even when to use them!  It was chaotic and I definitely wasn't getting the ultimate savings because I didn't have a system to my coupon organization.  So I thought I probably should take the time to explain my organization system just in case your in the same boat that I was.

First of all, basically there are two different ways to organize coupons.  The binder or the box.  I, personally, prefer the box so that's what I'm going to discuss tonight.  However, I plan to do another post soon on the binder method because I have a friend who loves using her binder!  It's really just a matter of opinion and what works best for you.

I chose the box, because it's very economical and because it's very simple.  You don't have to buy an expensive binder and sheet protectors to hold all of those coupons, instead you use things you probably already have around, and if not, they're very inexpensive.

Here's what you'll need:

  • 1 Plastic Shoe Box with Lid (I bought mine at Wal-Mart for 97 cents!)
  • Legal Envelopes (you will need several, how ever many categories you have in your box)
  • Index Cards (these are used as labels in the boxes)
  • Scissors (to have with you in case you find an in-store coupon, or just for convenience at home when clipping)
  • Sharpie (to circle the products in the ads that you have coupons for)
  • Pen

So here's what I did:

I put several envelopes in the shoebox, and then wrote category names on index cards and placed them vertically in the envelopes.  These work as my dividers and my coupons go inside of the envelopes.  Here is a list of the categories that I use in my box.  (There are a few I need to go ahead and divide again such as my "meats.")

Here is my list (yes, they are all in alphabetical order)

Walgreens

I have different envelopes for two transactions that way while I'm shopping I put the coupons in the appropriate envelope and when I go to the cashier I already have everything nice and organized and ready to hand to him or her.  The Homeland and Walgreens envelopes are to use for store coupons, receipts, or for Walgreens, Register Rewards!

Remember you are in charge of your box.  If you find a way to organize yours that's easier for you, that's what it's all about.  You just need an organization system that will help you maximize your savings with coupons.  If you find different categories are better for you, then go for it! And, have fun!!

I would love to hear from you if you organize your coupons a different way.  The more ideas the more fun!

Thankful Thursday 2/10/11

Well, it's "Thankful Thursday" here at The Frugal Family Life, so I wanted to take just a little time to share with you all what I'm thankful for today.

There are so many things, really, that I could thank God for, but since I'm just choosing one thing each Thursday, this week (since it's almost Valentine's Day) I'm thankful for my husband.  Now, I'll try not to go into all the lovey dovey, sappy stuff, but he really, truly is my best friend.  I'm so thankful to God for leading me to him and for allowing me to find the man perfect for me.  And no, I didn't say he was perfect, just perfect for me!

Well, that's enough about me.  What are YOU thankful for on this "Thankful Thursday?"
