Earlier this week I posted on facebook that I was wanting to answer a few reader questions. I received a couple and am hoping to answer them the best I can!
Sylvia asked: "Does Walmart honor competitor's coupons?"
The answer is yes. However, there are a few stipulations. According to their
coupon policy, they will accept the competitor coupons, but here are the facts:
Competitors' coupons
- A specific item for a specified price, for example, $2.99
- Buy one, get one free (BOGO) coupons for items with a specified price
- Have a valid expiration date
- Are acceptable in black and white
Basically what that means is they will honor the coupons, but they MUST have a specified price. So, let's look at a couple examples. Walgreens in-ad coupons that specify, for example, Scotch tape for $.99. This type of coupon will be accepted because it specifies the price. However, a Target coupon that says $1.00/1 Dove Shampoo will NOT (or should not according to policy) be accepted because it does not specify a price. This also goes for the BOGO coupons. As long as the price of the item is specified on the coupon it should be accepted. If it simply says $1 off or $.50 off, it should not be accepted.
Now, I want to clarify that I rarely shop at Walmart anymore since I usually go to stores that double coupons. However, when I have been I have noticed that it seems the acceptance of coupons varies from store to manager to cashier. There are so many employees that may not be as familiar with the policy as we are, so sometimes certain coupons may have been accepted when they shouldn't have been or not been accepted when they should have been.
I recommend
printing the coupon policy and taking it with you so that you will know and be able to show your cashier if needed. And as always, please, please use your coupons ethically. If you know that a competitor coupon should not be accepted at Walmart please don't try to use it anyway. That's considered coupon fraud, and we for sure don't want to be dishonest or lose our coupon priveleges all together!
Hope that clarifies the Walmart coupon issue! Great question, Sylvia! Thanks!
