For all of the Nichols shoppers who have been worried about them not accepting some of the new barcode coupons, here is an update for you! Dawn, a very helpful reader of The Frugal Family Life, spoke with the manager and the corporate office about the issue and then sent me the following email. Here is what she learned:
“I have some bad news . A couple of weeks ago, I posted that I had spoken to the manager at Nichol's about the new coupons and them not taking them and then going in to show him the coupons. At the time, he told me that as long as they were not outrageous savings, he would honor them. He told me that the cashiers are supposed to question them, but that a manager should approve them. Well, last weekend (Aug 27th) I went back into Nichols to do my shopping, and since that manager, Andre, was checking out customers, I thought it would be quicker to go into his lane since he could approve the coupons for me. Well, boy was I wrong! He informed me that he would take them this time, but they are not going to be able to take them anymore after that day. I reminded him that I was the one he'd talked to the week before. He finally remembered me, and said again he'd take them if they weren't outrageous. But then I encountered my second problem of the day. I had a coupon for Sara Lee 100% wheat bread 20 oz loaf and another coupon for Sara Lee Iron Kids White Wheat Bread. Well, he informed me that only one would double because they were "like" coupons. I disagreed, but he insisted they were "like" and that was their policy. I went ahead and paid, but I knew I was right, lol. So I called Nichols corporate office and spoke to the actual owner, Gary Nichols. He told me that I was indeed right about the coupons not being "like" and they should have both doubled. He said he would be calling the store to reeducate them on "like" coupons. However, he also gave me some bad news. He talked to his IT guy about the new coupons coming out that no longer have that squared bar code in the bottom left. He said they are aware that the manufacturers are changing their coupons to no longer include that bar code, but that their computers won't scan the other codes. He said he's unsure yet if will just be a minor software update on the registers or if they will have to replace their system. He said that until they are able to scan them, they will NOT be able to take them (including the ones that are spitting out of the little coupon machines on their very own shelves in store!). He said that they wouldn't get reimbursed for them if they didn't scan. I don't really understand this since they manually enter in coupons when they price match with no problem, but I'm just passing on what he told me on the phone. I've tried to help with this matter, and I'm unsure of what else to do. Maybe if more customers called to complain it would help? Not sure, but in any case, I figured I would share the latest on this coupon issue with you guys, so you don't encounter the same issues I did.”
Thank you, Dawn, for your help with this update…..and let’s all *hope* it’s an easy software update that can be fixed easily so they’ll start accepting these new coupons again!
