Wednesday's Words of Wisdom 4/11/12

"The biggest threat to the church today is fans who call themselves Christians but aren't actually interested in following Christ. They want to be close enough to Jesus to get all the benefits, but not so close that it requires anything from them."
"Fans [as opposed to followers of Jesus] often confuse their admiration for devotion. They mistake their knowledge of Jesus for intimacy with Jesus. Fans assume their good intentions make up for their apathetic faith."

Kyle Idleman (Not a fan: Becoming a Completely Committed Follower of Jesus)

There is so much that could be said about the quotes above.  It’s unfortunate to me the loss of commitment that has occurred with people who call themselves Christians.  We are not Christians just to look better in other people’s eyes.  We don’t earn favor with God if we call ourselves Christians!  We, instead, should be focused on a true, intimate, daily relationship with Jesus Christ!  This requires a sacrifice on our part!  We must crucify ourselves daily and give up our own selfish desires.  At the same time, we must realize that nothing that we do makes us any better.  We are all sinners.  Every one of us!  Jesus died for all of our sins and it’s only by His grace that we can accept that gift of forgiveness!  I don’t know about you, but the knowledge of His sacrifice humbles me.  It makes me want to worship Him, want to have that intimate relationship, want to be a follower of Christ—not just a fan!
